Bullet proof steel garage workbenches

Steel workbenches usually fall into the category of portable type workbenches. Indeed, it would be rather unusual, although not unfeasible to build a permanent workbench into a residential garage using steel. Since a residential garage is almost always built on a concrete slab, the weight of the workbench isn't much of an issue. Never the less, most folks do not have access to welding equipment to build a solid steel workbench, and building one using nuts and bolts would seem kind of pointless.

Most workbench builders opt for wood when building a permanent workbench built into the garage wall structure, simply because the material is readily available, inexpensive, and durable. You'll find no argument here - when it comes to permanent workbenches, wood is the way to go. Steel is far more feasible and popular for the portable and semi portable workbenches.

The definition of what  a steel workbench can be somewhat nebulous. Are we talking about something with a steel leg and frame structure, and a wood top, or something that is entirely made of steel, including the worktop? The answer to that question really lies entirely with the various marketing and sales geniuses that label things this way or that way. What's more important to you is the functionality needed for your particular workbench interests.

There are steel leg and frame workbenches that feature tin or galvanized steel tops, but usually a slab of wood tops these workbenches. That wood slab can be anything from cheep particle board to more specialized hard woods. Many folks are quite surprised to hear cheap particle board topped workbenches advocated here. But think of it this way - if you tend to work with goopy, gloppy materials including grease, epoxies, or resigns, then that cheap particle board top becomes unusable - especially if your workbench needs include occasional cleanliness. The positive aspect of cheap a particle board topped workbench is that it can be replaced for cheap. And since standard sizes are often an integral feature of commercially available residential steel garage workbenches, then a new particle board top can usually be purchased from the local Home-Dumpo for only a few bucks - wallah! a new worktop for your workbench.

There are specialized workbenches that are made entirely of steel, but these are usually designed for specialty hobbies or niche work - they can consist of a single welded piece of garage furniture, or they can be simple knock-down structures devoid of hard fasteners. Either way, if a portable steel workbench is part of your garages future, it's time to consider your options - hard top or wood top.
