Saving money on a cabinet workbench
How to get the best cabinet workbench
for the lowest cost
Garage cabinet workbenches
are great at maximizing available storage space with cupboards
and drawers that utilize every space above and below the
workbench.
A simple workbench consisting of just a table
top and legs can also be very useful, but the space under the
table is wasted, and the wall space behind it is unused unless
you have separate organization products to deploy in these
areas.
Most cabinet designs allow for adjustable shelf
height which helps optimize the space available according to
your storage needs. Even the drawers that come with these units
have organizing separators that make for easy customization to
fit kinds of tools and supplies you work with most.
It's entirely feasible to build your own
cabinet workbench from scratch. You have complete control over
the size, design, and components used. You can bring together
wall cabinets of your choosing, along with floor standing
drawer units, and if all this stuff fits the space, you're
done.
Wall mounted pegboard is a popular option for
tool storage, and it can't be beat for quick, easy access to
your work tools. But it's not exactly an efficient use of the
space, since there is no depth to the storage space - only one
layer of tools can be stored against the wall.
A cabinet workbench is best made from a sturdy
metal frame, with heavy metal legs and a heavy wooden top. The
weight is important to provide stability while you are working,
especially if you work involves heavy hammering, sawing, or any
other work requiring a rock solid base.
If you're building the unit yourself, you can
design with a thick wooden base frame. On the other hand, if
you decide to go with a kit for this type of workbench, then
you will undoubtedly have a steel framed bench - nothing wrong
with that. As the maker, it's up to you.
The type of work you do most should be a
consideration before buying vs building a garage cabinet
workbench. If you tend to work with woods and metals then heavy
and sturdy along with cabinet storage is the winner.
On the other hand, if you tend to specialize in
electronics, assembly, or hobbies where shaping of heavy
materials is not a significant requirement, then sturdiness is
not as important as a wood / metal working hobby.
Cabinet workbenches are a great organizational
asset to any handy-man or hobby enthusiast. You can buy or
build, and each has it's own advantages. But above all,
installing a cabinet workbench in your garage does not need to
be an overly expensive.
