How to Replace Garage Door Springs

Your garage doors springs are installed on every residential garage door. They enables the door to be opened and closed quite easily. There are two types of springs used on garage doors. The first one is torsion springs and the second most popular one are the extension springs.

Torsion springs are hard to replace. Doing so can even be dangerous to the unskilled. If you have torsion springs installed on your garage door, it's better to hire a professional to do the job. Torsion springs are the ones wound up around the bar and are placed right above the garage door. They come in pairs so there will always be two of them.

To replace extension springs, on the other hand, follow these steps:

1. Lift the garage door to its full open position. Lock it with a place of pliers, usually a ViseGrip. Put it on the track of the door found at the bottom of the roller running within the track. You might not be able to do this by yourself. Ask somebody to assist you.

2. Remove the defective springs. Test out the pulleys as well. If there are any signs of wear and tear, especially in the bearing, replace it. Look at the surface of the pulleys or sheaves. Check for any considerable wear and tear.

3. Buy spring replacements. To ensure that you are getting the right springs, bring the old or broken ones to the local hardware store. Have the sales attendant give you the exact match. To ensure full workability, buy everything else that you found broken or worn.

4. Install the springs. Look at how unbroken springs are installed. Pattern the ones you want to replace after those. You might need to refer to a neighbors garage door if your's replacing all springs, and forget how they go together. Install the springs in the exact way it should be.

5. Carefully test your spring installation. When the garage door spring is in place, you can start removing the ViceGrip you placed on the doors. Slowly and carefully do this step. Observe if you had replaced the extension springs right. Adjust accordingly.

6. Test the spring for durability. To ensure that there will be no accidents any time in the future due to broken springs, test it accordingly. Always perform the testing with utmost care. Make sure that you are on your guard when you do this step.

7. As you do all these steps, ensure that nobody is standing near the area. Safety is your first priority all the time. Badly installed springs may pop out and break. And accidents do happen. Always take extra caution when replacing garage door springs. Always wear safety glasses on a project like this.

These are seven simple steps to replace extension springs. But again, if you are not a handyman type of guy, do not attempt to do this by yourself. Safety in your garage is really important. And garage doors poorly installed could prove to be risky.

Unless you know what you are doing, better call a professional. Always value safety and functionality. That's the most important thing!
